Recipe: Spicy Shahnai Chana Curry

This hearty, flavorful curry made with Shahnai Chana is a perfect meal for any occasion. The combination of chickpeas, tomatoes, and aromatic spices creates a rich and satisfying dish, best served with rice or naan.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Shahnai Chana (soaked overnight)
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions:

Step 1: Cook the Chana:

  • Drain and rinse the soaked Shahnai Chana. In a pressure cooker, add the chickpeas and 4 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes. If using a pot, cook on medium heat until the chickpeas are soft and tender.

Step 2: Prepare the Curry Base:

  • Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

  • Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  • Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute.

  • Add chopped tomatoes, green chili (if using), turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil begins to separate from the masala.

Step 3: Add the Chickpeas:

  • Add the cooked Shahnai Chana to the pan, along with 1-2 cups of the cooking liquid. Stir to combine.

  • Season with salt and garam masala. Let the curry simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. If the curry becomes too thick, add a little water to reach your desired consistency.

Step 4: Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.

This Spicy Shahnai Chana Curry is a flavorful, nutritious dish that’s both filling and delicious. It’s an excellent way to incorporate the goodness of chickpeas into your meals while enjoying a variety of spices.
